Ger areas of Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia is home to more than 60% of the city’s entire population, yet there is a lack of critical infrastructure and resources. In the Mongolian language, there is no word equivalent to “community” and community spaces are few and far between.
Ger Innovation Hub is a first-of-its-kind community space located in the heart of the most bustling Ger areas of Ulaanbaatar. GerHub constructed this space in partnership with Rural Urban Framework, an award-winning non-profit research, and design collaborative based at The University of Hong Kong. Ger Innovation Hub has recently opened its doors to the community after pandemic-related delays and is running various workshops across education, health, and other capacity-building initiatives amongst community members.
We are raising $100,000 to support the below three activities:
Green space activation
A portion of the raised funds will go towards activating a lively urban green space surrounding Ger Innovation Hub. We are hoping to engage communities in outdoor and environmental education, and community gardening to improve the health and wellbeing of our community members.
Holistic educational programming for youth
We will continue implementing a comprehensive education program for the community youth, focusing on literacy-building, overcoming educational lag, creative play, 21st century and digital literacy skills!
Building local capacity to run operations and plan for financial sustainability
GerHub is striving to make Ger Innovation Hub operationally self-sustaining by 2023. Once we establish this, the community center will be run by local community leaders. The rest of the funds will help us ensure and financially plan for the longevity, continuity, and maintenance of the space and the programs.
