GerHub is implementing the the Asia Foundation’s Let’s Read program, to promote reading for young children between ages of 0 and 5, and help parents and caregivers use children’s books as critical tools in actively contributing to early childhood development of their young children. If adults spend only 15 minutes a day reading together with young children, it significantly boosts cognitive, socio-emotional, and behavioral skills that are essential for pre-primary school-aged children. GerHub is experimenting with our communities in Khoroo 31 and 43, Songinokhairkhan District, with fun and accessible tools to encourage parents, teachers, and other caregivers to spend quality time and read together with their children aged under 5 years.

Young ChangeMaker Award

GerHub launched its first ever annual Young ChangeMaker Award (YCMA) program, a personal development grant for rising junior and senior year university students to carry out an independent and meaningful project in Mongolia. This fast-paced summer program aims to tap into the potential of future change makers by assisting students in better preparing for their future careers and lives while also allowing them to pursue their passions and contribute to society.

The first year’s recipient was Ulemj Boldbaatar, Cognitive and Behavioural Neuroscience, Loyola University Chicago, US, which was made possible by a generous grant from our Board Member Nemuun Gal. With the award, Ulemj had the opportunity to have the first milestone of her dream, through a project – Gej Bich

GerHub implemented two phases of UNAA (Ulaanbaatar Accessibility Appraisal) project: the first phase was research on mobility barriers faced by residents of Ulaanbaatar’s ger areas in three select sites and in the second phase, GerHub ran informal taxi trials in two khoroos in order to test the proof of service concept in the target areas.

We disseminated the research findings through the report in two languages and organized a Design Studio for youths, who designed service solutions to address mobility challenges in the GIH target areas – Khoroo 31 and 43, Songinokhairkhan District.

In summer 2021, delivery trials were completed for goods and medicine, especially those quarantined for COVID-19. The January 2022 trial to deliver coal proved to be in demand by households as a potential service for ger areas.

Public Outreach Campaign for Water Compact Mongolia

One of the pressing issues is access to water and water safety in ger areas in Mongolia, one of the countries with the highest water stress. The importance of access to water was highlighted during the Covid-19 for hygiene and the risk of mutation.  GerHub developed a public outreach video series for the Millennium Challenge Corporation’s (MCC) Water Compact in Mongolia in partnership with the Mongolian Film Institute.  The campaign objective is to draw public attention to water issues and secure water accessibility for all residents and businesses in UB under the ongoing Compact Agreement implemented by the MCC and the Government of Mongolia.
